This article examines the potential of video games as archives for intangible cultural heritage (ICH), arguing that the medium's unique characteristics make it particularly well-suited for safeguarding living culture.

Through systematic mapping of ICH features onto video game affordances, I demonstrate how the medium addresses three critical preservation challenges: (1) video games provide representation of cultural practices through multiple semiotic modes – text, image, sound, haptic feedback, and uniquely, procedurality – allowing for comprehensive depiction of ICH's multimodal nature; (2) they integrate materiality and context by simulating the physical environments, objects, and temporal conditions in which cultural practices occur, addressing issues of decontextualization; and (3) they enable embodied knowledge transmission through player character and NPC movements, capturing the fundamental role of the human body as both carrier and archive of cultural practices. This research contributes to ongoing discourse at the intersection of digital humanities, heritage studies, and game studies.
