Games as playful media and complex systems can’t be drafted as a whole beforehand, but have to be grown into their (final?) form through iterations, morphing from version to version, finding their own shape step by step or just evolving forever.

As such, they are presenting a unique challenge to all kind of preservation efforts, as they constitute as a moving target, often with no fixed shape at all. This article/ essay aims to explore the possible implications of preserving development histories and to give a brief overview on why it is important to understand the evolving (creative) process of digital games (as an example for all digital media). It will do this with the help of an in-depth look at and learnings of "Devolution: how to grow a game", a project that explores and shows the creative process and challenges of game development.
