Forms and Significance of Archiving and Providing Access to Old Digital Games

This chapter suggests that archiving digital games should move beyond nostalgia and technical preservation to capture their role as cultural memory.


Non-research archives (like Atarimania and KC85@DFend) and commercial collections (Atari50) focus primarily on entertainment value and partly present biased narratives, such as minimizing female developers' historical contributions. By analyzing politically charged East-German KC85 games (Revolution, Perestroika) and Western titles (Tomcat, Atari 2600), the article highlights the need to contextualize games politically and socially. The text concludes by proposing a new, annotated collection of East-German games to properly document their historical context.

Dieses Kapitel schlägt vor, dass die Archivierung digitaler Spiele über Nostalgie und technische Erhaltung hinausgehen sollte, um ihre Rolle für das kulturelle Gedächtnis zu erfassen. Nicht-forschungsorientierte Archive (wie Atarimania und KC85@DFend) sowie kommerzielle Sammlungen (Atari50) konzentrieren sich in erster Linie auf den Unterhaltungswert und präsentieren teilweise verzerrte Narrative, etwa in dem sie die historischen Beiträge von Entwicklerinnen nicht entsprechend herausstellen. Durch die Analyse von in der DDR erschienenen KC85-Spielen (Revolution, Perestroika) und westlicher Titel (Tomcat, Atari 2600) unterstreicht der Artikel die Notwendigkeit, Spiele politisch und sozial zu kontextualisieren. Abschließend wird eine neue, kommentierte Sammlung ostdeutscher Spiele vorgeschlagen, um deren historischen Kontext angemessen zu dokumentieren.
