In this paper I examine the narrative modes of the Bildung and the Gothic as playful perspectives.

The Bildung and the Gothic make and unmake each other in the videogame, where they engage in play with each other. The play of the Bildung and Gothic enriches both these modes and removes them from a sense of simplistic progress and its deployment as a device of objectification, respectively. This enables an understanding of the productive uses of these narrative modes in the videogame.
