This paper offers a poetological reading of Colossal Cave Adventure, situating it at the intersection of early computing, speleology, and media theory.

Building on the ELIZA effect, it examines how the game’s text interface creates an illusion of dialogue that blurs boundaries between human and machine. The cave is understood not merely as setting but as a metaphor for computer architecture and network systems such as ARPANET. Drawing on William Crowther’s background in cave mapping, the paper shows how spatial exploration in the game mirrors both programming and caving practice, so that the gaming experience can be understood as a a form of hybrid agency connecting human and machine.

Mário Gomes completed his doctorate at the Universities of Bonn and Florence with a dissertation on the interior monologue. In 2023, he undertook a postdoctoral research project at the University of Lisbon on the concept of the dispositif (Das Dispositiv: Genealogie eines Missverständnisses, Vienna: Turia + Kant, 2023). He has taught literature and media studies, aesthetics, and literary translation at several universities, including the University of Bonn, the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK), Freie Universität Berlin, and the University of Concepción (Chile), where he served as a DAAD lecturer. His current research focuses on the materiality of literature, expanded literature, and the use of large language models in literary translation.
