Around 1800 the ducal family of Weimar began decorating their living quarters with so-called jardins portatifs, a practice which quickly evolved into the establishment of winter gardens. The concept originated in Russia and was then adopted by Maria Pawlowna in Weimar. Her son, Carl Alexander, developed the concept in a progressive manner. Initially associated with Arcadian reveries, the Weimar winter gardens adopted iron and glass constructions after 1860, which were fashionable in contemporary industrial Britain.
