This paper examines literary and political reactions to the executions of monarchs in the English (Puritan) and French Revolutions using the example of four contemporary dramas by Andreas Gryphius, Ernst Carl Ludwig Ysenburg von Buri, Franz Hochkirch and an anonymous author. The focus is on the dramaturgical and agitational function of royalist hate speech and vows of revenge.
Ulrich Port ist Professor für Neuere deutsche Literatur an der Universität Trier. Forschungsschwerpunkte sind die Literatur des 18. und frühen 19.
