Der Beitrag diskutiert diese kritisch, arbeitet die Unterschiede und Verbindungslinien heraus und stellt bei Braudel ein größeres Potential und eine bessere Anschlussfähigkeit für empirische Forschungen zu Materialität und Umwelt fest. Er untersucht des weiteren die gleiche Frage mit Bezug auf die transdisziplinären stadtgeschichtlichen Forschung. Abschließend wird gefragt, inwieweit die analysierten Ansätze für Untersuchungen im Themenfeld der Umweltgeschichte im Anthropozän fruchtbar gemacht werden können.
Problems of space and materiality play a major role in the discussion of “layers of time,” as they do in the major theoretical concepts of Fernand Braudel and Reinhart Koselleck. The article critically discusses these concepts, highlights their differences and connections, and finds that Braudel's approach has greater potential and is more compatible with empirical research on materiality and the environment. It further examines the same question with reference to transdisciplinary urban history research. Finally, it asks to what extent the analyzed approaches can be made fruitful for research in the field of environmental history in the Anthropocene.

Professor für Neuere und Neueste Geschichte an der Humboldt-Universtität zu Berlin.
