Ziel ist eine vergleichende Darstellung der Fachgeschichte in verschiedenen europäischen Ländern anlässlich des 250jährigen Jubiläums des weltweit ersten Lehrstuhls für Germanistik 1776 am Trinity College Dublin sowie der Movens Konferenz 2025 in Limerick. Geplant ist ein Sammelband mit Fallstudien zu zentralen Fragen wie den historischen, politischen und ideologischen Bedingungen der Fachentstehung, den Schwerpunkten und Persönlichkeiten der Anfangszeit, den pädagogischen Entwicklungen sowie den kulturellen, sprachlichen und politischen Faktoren bei der Etablierung der Germanistik. Darüber hinaus werden Unterschiede zwischen verschiedenen europäischen Ländern
untersucht ebenso wie Bedeutung transnationaler Netzwerke und Diskurse.
The project ‘Beginnings and Developments: Contributions to the History of German Studies’ examines the emergence and development of German studies as a university subject and builds on existing research. The aim is to provide a comparative overview of the history of the subject in various European countries on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the world's first chair of German studies at Trinity College Dublin in 1776 and the Movens Conference 2025 in Limerick. The plan is to publish an anthology with case studies on key issues such as the historical, political and ideological conditions surrounding the emergence of the discipline, the main areas of focus and key figures in its early days, pedagogical developments, and the cultural, linguistic and political factors involved in establishing German studies. In addition, differences between various European countries will be examined, as will the significance of transnational networks.
Gisela Holfter ist Germanistikprofessorin in Irland. Nach Studium in Köln, Cambridge und St. Louis Promotion in Köln und Lehrtätigkeit in Dunedin, Neuseeland. Seit 1996 lehrt sie an der University of Limerick, Irland, wo sie auch das Centre for Irish-German Studies leitet. Ihre Hauptforschungsgebiete sind deutsch-irische Beziehungen, deutschsprachige Literatur des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts, das Exil in Irland und die Fachgeschichte der Germanistik.
