Departing from a brief survey of enlightened studies on medical and anthropological functions of tears, the essay tackles the poetic and psychological aspects in which German novels of the late 18th century are depicting crying heroes and their affective economies. Goethe’s ‘Werther’ is showing a main character whose tears as a form of emotional comment are following the verbal apperception of reality. In Jacobi’s ‘Woldemar’ the stream of tears turns into the major medium of self constitution. The novels characterize an ambiguous ego, both unstable and presumptious, weak and powerful. They prelude the romantic ego and its autonomous constitution by acts of self-imposition as a medium of hybrid subjectivity.
Peter-André Alt, geb. 1960, ist seit 2012 Präsident der Deutschen Schillergesellschaft und seit 2010 Präsident der Freien Universität Berlin. Er ist Professor für Neuere deutsche Literaturwissenschaft, seit 2005 an der FU Berlin, zuvor an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum (1995-2002) und an der Universität Würzburg (2002-2005). Zahlreiche Publikationen zur deutschen Literatur des 17. bis 20. Jahrhunderts, zur Poetik und Ästhetik sowie zur Beziehung von Literatur und Wissen. Im Jahr 2005 erhielt er den Marbacher Schiller-Preis für die zweibändige Schiller-Biographie (2. Aufl. 2004).
